Situated in 7 forested acres on the eastern slope of Catoctin Mountain in Frederick County, MD, Catoctin Mountain Botanicals has been growing ginseng in the woods using organic methods since 1995. Currently American Ginseng (Panax Quinquefolium) is being cultivated in raised beds comprising 10,000 sq. ft. and about 30,000 sq. ft is being grown in wild simulated stands.

American Ginseng transplant rootlets are being offered to interested growers from the seedling beds (shown above). These rootlets are grown under a natural woods canopy in ancient, mountain forest soil & have never been exposed to pesticides or fungicides. In ideal conditions, 3-year old ginseng plants will grow flowers that produce red berries in the fall. The berries may be picked each year for growing more, highly prized American Ginseng plants. Five (5) and six (6) year old plants are well into their seed bearing stage with berry pods containing up to 50 seeds to expand your plantings more quickly. These may be transplanted or dried for personal consumption.

We also have goldenseal and naturally growing stands of bloodroot, black cohosh, jack in the pulpit, and mayapple from which we can provide rootlets for transplanting. These forest medicinals are available in significant quantities as a byproduct of our ongoing ginseng bed preparation.

We offer "stratified" ginseng seeds in August that will sprout in the first spring after planting. Also, woods grown medicinal plant rootlets will be available to ship from Sept to March. All of the rootlets are hand selected and shipped via priority mail. Instructions for transplanting will also be included.
